
GEORGE W. ROBINSON
ROBINSON, GEORGE W. Surrounded by his family, George Robinson (Robbie) passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton on Monday, May 8th, 2006 after a brief illness. Born in Moncton, NB in 1921, George was the son of the late George Robinson and Margaret Robinson Shute. He is predeceased by two brothers, Clarence and Gordon and an infant grandson. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and went overseas in October 1941 to join Air Force Bomber Command. Shot down on May 8th, 1942, George spent almost three years in German camps as a Prisoner of War until his escape in April 1945. Upon his return to Canada, he attended Veterans' School in Millidgeville, then enrolled in UNB, graduating in 1949 with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. He began his engineering career in the School Planning Branch of the Provincial Department of Education, becoming the director in 1958. He retired from this position in 1977 to join P.C.M. Consultants as Project Construction Manager of the new Regional Hospital in Saint John, NB. He retired in 1986. He has been very active in community affairs, having been president of the R.C.A.F Association and UNB Alumni Association, member of the UNB Board of Governors, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Victoria Public Hospital, and the first Chairman of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Board. He also served as President of the New Brunswick Hospital Association and was a member of the Canadian Hospital Association. He was a life member of the New Brunswick Professional Engineers Association, and a founding member of the Capital Winter Club. He served on Fredericton City Council for three years and was a candidate for mayor in 1986. A parishioner of St. Dunstan's Church, he was a lay reader and former member of the Parish Council. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a 50-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. In recognition of his community service, George received the Paul Harris Award given by Rotary in 2002. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Kay, and three children: daughter, Susan (Edward G. Kettela), son, Mark (Jennifer), and daughter, Beth Donovan (Shane) all of the Fredericton area. There are four grandchildren; Katharine Miller (Tim), Kelly Burgess, George Burgess and Kristy Robinson, and one great-grandchild, Josie Miller, along with several nieces and nephews, and half-brother, John Shute. An avid gardener and collector of old coins, he also greatly enjoyed the company of his family and friends. For the past seventeen years, he and Kay wintered in Clearwater, Florida, where they made many good friends. Visitation will take place at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 10th, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 will hold tribute service at 7:00 pm Funeral Mass will take place at St. Dunstan's Church on Thursday, May 11th, 2006 at 12:00 noon, with a reception in the Monsignor Boyd Family Centre following the interment at the Hermitage cemetery.
