DANIEL MICHAEL C.D. HURLEY
HURLEY, DANIEL MICHAEL C.D., LL.M., PH.D, LL.D, Q.C. The death of Dr. Daniel Michael Hurley of Fredericton occurred at the Veteran's Health Unit, Fredericton on the 8th August, 2007. Born May 4th 1929, in Barnaby River New Brunswick, he was the son of Clara (Maher) and Daniel Hurley. Born into a large family in the small farming community of Semiwagon Ridge on the Miramichi, Dan proved to be an outstanding student and athlete. He won a scholarship to St. Thomas University, then located in Chatham, NB, and graduated magna cum laude in 1950 as class valedictorian. Commissioned in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps, Lord Strathcona's Horse Regiment, Dan served in Korea and Japan in 1952-53 with the UN Forces. Following an honourable discharge with the rank of Captain, he returned to his scholarly pursuits. With a Beaverbrook Scholarship, he completed his BCL at UNB and went again abroad to complete a Masters in Law at the London School of Economics. In London he met a stunning and similarly talented young lawyer, Kathleen Murphy, who was completing her own LL.M at King's College. They married in 1960 and returned to Fredericton where Dan was appointed Assistant Professor of Law at UNB Law School and earned the rank of Full Professor by 1970. In his more than 30-year career at UNB he served as Associate Dean of Law, sat on numerous committees, continued to practice law, served on various councils and taskforces, and published widely. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1989. His tireless commitment to public service kept him active in community and public sector work; he was Chair for many years of the District 26 Board of School Trustees, a member of both provincial and federal Parole Boards, the John Howard Society, Fredericton Children's Aid Society, Friends of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton Foundation Inc, and numerous others. A stalwart supporter of the Liberal Party, he worked as a campaign manager, stood as a candidate, and offered his services in nearly all aspects of local, provincial and federal politics. A man of boundless energy and generosity, Dan strove to achieve excellence, fairness and justice in all his endeavors. His greatest love and reward was to serve the needs of others, be they his family, his students, his colleagues or his country. He was predeceased eight months ago by his beloved wife, Kate. Also predeceased by three brothers: Martin Maher Hurley, John Leo Hurley and James David Hurley; one sister, Sister Phoebe Hurley; and an infant daughter. He leaves his son Daniel and daughter-in-law Annika Rose of Whitehorse and his daughter Clarissa of Fredericton. Also survived by four brothers: Col. Ray Hurley of Ottawa, Peter Hurley of Miramichi, Joe Hurley and Anthony Hurley (Louise) of Toronto, and four sisters: Sister Mary Hurley and Clarissa Hurley of Saint John, Alice Billington (Cliff) of Toronto and Stella Renneburg (Ray) of Kamloops BC.
