DR. LASZLO SZABO

SZABO, DR. LASZLO (1922 - 2008) It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Laszlo Szabo announces his passing at his home in Island View, on November 15, 2008. Dr. Szabo was born on August 24, 1922, in Kerekegyhaza, Hungary and educated in Hungary, Germany and Russia. He was a professor and scholar of linguistics. He moved with his family to Fredericton in 1969, became a proud Canadian and was a professor at UNB until his retirement. He published many books and articles on Finno-Ugrian and Algonquian Linguistics, among them his collection of Lappish folktales and his Malecite/German/English dictionary. He was a dedicated teacher and researcher. Dr. Szabo will be greatly missed and always loved and remembered by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Katalin; his son Laszlo; and daughter in-law Kate; daughter Zsuzsa; and son in-law Rick; and his adored grandchildren, Eva, Nora (with her husband Sebastian) , Zita and Christopher. He was predeceased by his parents, Janos Szabo and (Batu); his brothers, Janos, Sandor and Imre. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his brother Zoltan and several cousins, nieces and nephews in Hungary. There will be no visitation by request. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Dr. Laszlo Szabo Memorial Scholarship Fund, Development and Donor Relations, University of New Brunswick, P.O. Box 4400, Fredericton, N.B., E3B 5A3. A private graveside ceremony will take place at a later date. www.mcadamsfh.com
