
WILLIAM BREWSTER GREENWOOD
GREENWOOD, WILLIAM BREWSTER - Passed away peacefully, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax, May 24, 2002, in his 85th year. Born in New Glasgow, in 1917, he was the only son of the late William and Laura (Smith) Greenwood. He received his early education in New Glasgow and joined the Pictou Highlanders Regiment prior to the War. After the war he resigned his commission as Captain and moved to Halifax. During the war years he met and later married, Gloria Eleanor Martel, a loving marriage of 59 years. In 1947, he founded Maritime Moving & Storage Limited, which grew to become one of the largest moving companies in Atlantic Canada. He was very active in the warehousing industry on a national basis and served as National President of the Canadian Warehousing Association and on the Board of Allied Van Lines. Following the sale of his business in 1968, he was active in various enterprises. Among these activities, he was Executive Director of the Halifax-Dartmouth Real Estate Board. He served on the Board of Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Hospital for many years, subsequently becoming executive director of the hospital for six years, retiring in 1982. He was very active in his community serving as Alderman for Ward Seven for nine years including one term as Deputy Mayor in 1958-59. He served as President of the Halifax Executive's Association and the Metro Executive Group. He served on the Halifax School Board and was chairman of the Halifax Forum Commission. He was a Board member, President and Trustee of the Halifax YMCA and was honoured with the "Red Triangle Award" for oustanding service. He was a member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, a director of Ashburn Golf Club, chairman of the Saraguay Club, a member of Presbyterian Church of St. David and a founding member of Calvin Presbyterian Church. His happiest times were those spent with his wife and children, especially at their summer home in Mineville, where he enjoyed gardening and teaching his children sailing, swimming and boating activities. He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; children, Judith (Hugh) Smith, Bedford; William B. Jr. (Kathy Mann), Seabright; Susan (Douglas) Thompson, Saint John; Peter (Kathy Zareski), Halifax; Jane (Bill) Cooley, Amy, James, Victoria, Katie, William, David, Edward, Jay, Rob, Joel, Alexandra, Laura, Mary-Ellen, Thomas, Sandy; great-grandchildren, Meghan and Hugh MacAskill. Funeral Service under the direction of Snow's Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax was held at 2 pm, Tuesday, May 28 in Calvin Presbyterian Church, Halifax. A reception followed in the Church Hall. Remembrances may be made to Canadian National Institute for the Blind Library.
