Frederick Ira Brownell PUGWASH - Frederick Ira Brownell. 91, Pugwash, passed away peacefully, April 6, 2007, in the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash. Born in Northport April 17, 1915, he was a son of the late Ira and Jane (Pauley) Brownell. Fred started fishing as a young man at fifteen in Northport. Throughout the years he fished out of Malagash and later Pugwash, retiring in 1991. He had also worked as the Harbour Pilot and had safely piloted many ships in and out of Pugwash Harbour. He and his wife Bessie had owned and operated Brownell's Radio & TV. He was a veteran of the Second World War and had served overseas in England. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #60, where he had held various offices; a member, Past Master and fifty year jewel holder of Acadia Lodge #13, AF&AM; the Pugwash Lion%E2%80%9As Club; Wesley-St. Matthew United Church; the Cumberland Development Authority; the Pugwash District High School Board of Trustee's for the Cumberland County School Board; a charter and lifetime member as well as a Director of the Pugwash Yacht Club; a founding member of the original Northumberland Golf Club and was named Port Captain for Pugwash by the Canadian Power Squadron. His family, especially his grandchildren, brought him his greatest happiness. He was an avid card player and always loved a good game of cribbage or 45s. He took great pride in his gardens, enjoyed cooking, collecting gadgets, and had a love for knowledge. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his son, Andy, Moncton; daughters, Betty (Bill) Hillier, Ottawa; Gwen (Stephen) Ferdinand, Pugwash; Roxie (Alan) Sarson, Wallace Bay; nine grandchildren, Scott, Neil, Dave, Kris, Adam, Meaghan, Vicki, Derek and Brian; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Brendan; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Bessie (VanBuskirk) Brownell; a son in infancy, four brothers and four sisters. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday, April 9, in Mundle's Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (243-2506), where a Royal Canadian Legion Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, followed by a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Wesley-St. Matthew United Church, Pugwash. Maureen Ellison officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Wallace River.
