ASHAEL W. SMITH

SMITH, ASHAEL W. - Ashael died at his home in Chocolate Cove, Deer Island on July 10th, 2006, with his family at his side, after a five month cancer battle. He was 72. He was born at Wicklow, Carleton County, NB, a son of Hughlett and Beulah (Tapley) Smith. In the fifties, Ashael worked in construction as a survey technician. During his life on Deer Island he was involved in various aspects of the fishing and aquaculture industries. He and his wife, Ruth Anne, owned and operated Smith's Cycle & Sports in St. Stephen for nine years. Prior to his illness, he was employed by Richardson Marine Services. He is survived by: his wife, Ruth Anne (Cline) Smith, daughter, Leslie (Paul) Johnson of Hendersonville, TN, and two sons, Byron (Mayra) Smith of Key West, FL, and Winston (Kimberly) Smith of Chocolate Cove; four grandchildren, Emma Johnson, Luke Johnson, Beverley Smith and Madeline Smith; one sister, Muriel (Al) Main of Port Angeles, WA, four brothers, Aubrey (Jean) Smith of Berlin, MD, Vernett (Terry) of Fredericton, NB, Sharpe (Betty) Smith of Dieppe, NB and Glad (Cathy) Smith of Chamcook, NB; an aunt, Sydna Reid of Hartland, NB; three nieces, seven nephews and several cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Norma. A memorial service will be held at the Leonardville Community Cemetery (Deer Island) on Wednesday, July 12th at 3:00 pm. Donations to local charities, in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated by the family.
