HUGHES, CHARLES DAVID - Fredericton - The family of Charles David Hughes, Q.C. of Fredericton, wishes to announce his death at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Sunday, December 14, 2008. One of New Brunswick's most prominent lawyers during a career of nearly 40 years, David Hughes established a law practice built on a keen mind and astute advice. His representation was much sought after and several times he appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada. He was recognized in his profession by an appointment as a Queen's Counsel.David Hughes was a member of a family long associated with the practice of law. His father, Hon. Charles Arthur Hughes, was Chief Justice of New Brunswick for 12 years and great-uncle, Peter Hughes, was a member of the Supreme Court of New Brunswick. A son of Charles and Edith (Atwater) Hughes, David was born on June 15, 1942 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick and moved to Fredericton with his family in 1945. David attended local schools and was involved in many organizations as a youth including the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. He graduated from U.N.B. Law School in 1966, first in his class and began the practise of law from an office on Charlotte Street to which he attracted clients from throughout New Brunswick. He was active in Liberal Party politics and once sought election to the provincial legislative assembly. David Hughes was an avid golfer and boating enthusiast; he will be remembered not only for his prominence in the legal profession but also for his dry wit and wonderful sense of humor. His friends were legion in number. He is survived by his children, Peter Hughes and Lindsay Hughes, his wife, Cecile Roy Hughes, his sister, Barbara Hughes Campbell (Paul Campbell), a brother, Richard Atwater Hughes (Judy Gyuk) and a granddaughter, Leah Clark. He also leaves to mourn an aunt, Florence Hughes, two nieces, Rose Campbell and Spain Hughes-Fagan as well as a nephew, Joseph Hughes Campbell. Visitation will be held at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Thursday, December 18th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.The funeral service will be held at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, 603 Union Street on Friday, December 19th at 4:00 p.m. Interment to take place at a later date.
