
Weldon C. Matthews
Weldon C. Matthews HALIFAX, NS - Weldon Q.C. Matthews, of Halifax, Nova Scotia passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2005. Weldon was born in O'Leary, Prince Edward Island on January 9, 1915 the eldest child of George and Emma (Carruthers) Matthews. After his early education in the local schools, he attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown where he earned a First Class Teachers Licence and taught school for seven years. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1942 and after training was retained as an instructor at No. 1 Wireless School in Montreal for a period of two years before being posted overseas. After discharge from the Service in 1945 Weldon entered the Faculty of Law at Dalhousie University in Halifax and obtained his Bachelor of Law Degree in 1950. He was appointed Queens Council in 1988. He accepted a position with the former Eastern Trust Company after graduation from Law School and served as Branch Manager in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and in Moncton, New Brunswick. He later returned to Halifax to serve as Manager of the Personal Trust Departments of all the Company's offices in the Maritimes. He retired from the Trust Company in 1979 and joined the law firm of Walker and Dunlop of Halifax where he served in the general practice of law for the next 15 years. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Bar Society and served as Provincial Chairman of the Wills and Trust Section of The Canadian Bar Association for a number of years. Weldon was at times an active member of golf and curling clubs in Halifax, Lunenburg and Moncton as well as other organizations in those areas. He was a life member of the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army of Halifax and Dartmouth and a Past President of The Rotary Club of Halifax NW. He was granted a Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotary International. Weldon was a member of St. Andrews United Church of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Alfretta (Wallace) and four brothers, Lloyd of O'Leary, P.E.I., Fred and Gerald of Summerside, P.E.I. and Elmer of Kingston, N.S. He is survived by two daughters, Linda (Gary) Wheeler of Moncton, N.B. and Gail Matthews of Halifax, N.S. Also four granddaughters, Christa (Mark) Thorne of Moncton, N.B., Tracy (Kirk) Rowe of Montreal, P.Q., Cindy (Andrew) Ingham of Halifax, N.S. and Susan Wheeler of Ottawa, Ontario. There are also 10 great grandchildren who will miss his love and story telling very much. Cremation has taken place. Visitation to take place on Friday, September 23, 2005 from 2 to 3 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. Funeral at 3 p.m. in Snow's Chapel. Interment to follow in St. John's Columbarium. Officiating, Arlene Riches. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army of choice.
