Patrick 'Paddy' DeGaust
Passed on: January 17th, 2009
64, Glace Bay It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Patrick John DeGaust on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at home, after a very courageous battle with his illnesses. Born in Glace Bay, Paddy was the only son of the late John and Angelena DeGaust. Following graduation from St. Michael's High School, Paddy attended St. Francis Xavier Junior College. He then moved to Halifax where he worked at the Nova Scotia Hospital and later the Halifax dockyards. Upon returning to Cape Breton, he worked for Devco as an electrician until his retirement. Paddy was an avid hunter and fisherman. His summers were spent at MacLeod's Campground in Dunvegan with Barb and his many friends sitting on the beach by day and the campfire by night. He also enjoyed the kitchen parties with his buddies at the Radio Club. But most often he could be found with a cup of tea in hand playing his guitar. He is survived by his dear stepmom, Mary DeGaust, Glace Bay; by his partner and soulmate, Barbara Odell; sister, Gloria Jean (Bruce) Aitken; Marion Bridge; stepdaughter, Wendi (Chad) Crocker and their daughter, Haleigh Crocker, Glace Bay; stepsisters, Mary Rogers and Georgina (Bob) Dugan, both of North Carolina, Kathleen Malafronte, Massachusetts, and Darlene Timmons, Alberta; nephews, John, Brian and Ronald Newcombe, Dean, Colin and Ryan MacArthur; stepniece, Rebecca Aitken; grandnieces, Vanessa, Nichole and Angelena; grandnephew, Carlin; many other relatives and very close friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Joan Newcombe. Visitation for Paddy will be held Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, 1:30 p.m., Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Donations in Paddy's memory or suggested to one's preferred charity.
