Vera Gilroy

With great sadness, the family of Vera Francina Gilroy, age 91, announce her peaceful passing at the Gables Lodge, Amherst.
Born in Minudie, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Aldaina (Phillips) Symes.
A farm girl from Minudie, she lived 60 years in Maccan, where she was a member of the Maccan Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher, the Sewing Circle and member of the Women's Missionary Society. She was greatly missed in the community when she moved to Amherst. Vera worked for many years at Lockhart's Nursing Home and the Playtex Factory in Amherst, which closed in the 70's. Vera was an Avon Representative in the area for many years.
Predeceased by her husband Gerald (Gilly) in 1999 and daughter Geraldine Francina in 1940, she will be sadly missed by Myrna (John) Proctor, Amherst, Gerry (Sonny) Gilroy, Edmonton, AB, Carolyn (Harold) O'Blenis, Moncton, Peter (Jill) Gilroy, Maccan and Elizabeth Cormier, Brampton, ON. Vera also leaves 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by siblings Lucy Symes, David Symes, George Symes, Clifford Symes, Beatrice Cameron, Margaret Brown, Freda Hoeg, Katherine Brown, and Mona Burke.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from the funeral home on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 2 pm, Rev. Phillip Scott officiating. Burial will take place in the United Baptist Cemetery in Maccan in the spring.
We, the family, would like to thank the caregivers, the nurses and the doctors at Dr. Georges L. DuMont Hospital, Moncton and the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, and Gables Lodge for all the care they have given our Mother over the last few months of her life.
