HARBOR – It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the tragic passing of Brooke Lori Harbor on March 28, 2009, at the age of 14. Brooke was born at the Swift Current Union Hospital on November 28, 1994. She grew up in the Kincaid District and attended school in Kincaid, SK. On the first day of her journey in life, Brooke was already in control. Brian and Cheryl never put her down. Brooke rarely spent a night in her own bed. Brooke would bribe, negotiate, or guilt her way into sleeping with them. By the age of three, Brooke was already the captain of her ship. Brooke was always the homemaker, schooling and mothering her younger brother, Cavin - organizing the entire household and making sure everything was done exactly right (Brooke’s way). This was alright with Dad and Cavin but made life for Cheryl very interesting. Though their mother and daughter relationship was very turbulent, competing to be ruler of the roost, they also enjoyed being best friends, and had unconditional love and everlasting support for each other. Brooke always wanted to be like her mom. Brian always said, like mother, like daughter. Cheryl really was Brooke’s mentor. Brooke’s quick wit, charm and sense of humour in so many ways mirrors Cheryl’s own approach to life. One time, on the way to a hockey game, Brooke and Rae Anne Hansen stood in the back of Barry Hansen’s truck and mooned the rest of the hockey team. No matter what the situation, Brooke always had an answer for everything. Her uncle Con once asked how her marks were in school. Brooke stated confidently, “I got 53%.†Con said, “Excellent, that’s 3% more than you need.†Brooke replied, “Exactly, please tell that to my mom.†Whenever Cheryl encouraged her to do better, Brooke would taunt her with a reply like, “I am just going to join the carnival, or be a street sweeper; you don’t need much education for that.†Brooke’s sense of humour was cultured by everyone - her mom, dad, uncles, aunts and all the family’s closest friends. Everyone played pranks and teased her; rarely did anyone get one up on her though. Brooke came home with a report card one day critiquing her teachers. In it she expressed the things she was satisfied with and how, with a little more effort, they could really improve. Brooke was full of energy. Whether she was at school, at hockey, or hanging out with friends or family, she was always the spark that ignited the fire in everyone. Brooke could scheme and plan with the best of us. If the going got rough, she always had a back up plan. One day Brooke wanted Cheryl to write a note for school stating that she didn’t have to go outside for recess; Cheryl refused, not wanting anything to do with it. Later that afternoon, Cheryl found the note pinned on the board at school signed by her dad. Brooke spent a lot of time with many other friends in town. She’d tease Brian and Cheryl saying she’d be happy to live with any of them because they had good food and especially her aunt Evelyn calling Eve all the time to find out if her basement suite would be ready any time soon. Brian’s patience and confidence in his little girl, along with Brooke’s ambition to be the best, complimented their relationship well. Brian taught Brooke to drive at an early age. She was always jumping into the driver’s seat and locking the doors to ensure that she’d be driving. Brooke joined 4H this year after many discussions and finally getting Dad to give in. They bought a steer. After the first weigh in, Brooke was quite disgusted with her steer. She told everyone who’d listen, “that steer’s so ugly, it should be put in the witness protection program.†Recently, Brooke and her life long friend Melissa Thibault had been counting down the days to Saturday’s Nickelback concert in Saskatoon. They had gotten tickets back in December. Brooke’s favourite song was titled “This Afternoon.†She had many other beautiful qualities as well. Brooke loved to cook, was a loyal friend and most of all Brooke included everyone in her circle of life. Brooke has touched us all in her own way. Brian and Cheryl would like to mention some of her closest friends: Melissa Thibault, Asha Kress, Bri-Andy Kress, Sonja Davidson, Jennifer Ulm, Paige Harrison and Jenna Panko. Brooke is survived by her parents, her mother, Cheryl and father, Brian; brother, Cavin; grandma, Mildred Harbor; and uncles and aunts: Mary Ellen (Vern) Gebhart and family, Daniel Harbor, Lesley (Kelvin) Scansen and family, Dave Harbor, Darryl (Shelley) Harbor and family, Mike (Debbie) Harbor and family; grandma Margaret Wilson; and uncles and aunts: Dianne (Brent) Brown, Con (Evelyn) Wilson and family, Lana (Ross) Evans and family, Brian Wilson and family, and Lori (Kelly) Pritchard and family. A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 2, 2009, 2:00p.m., at the Kincaid and District Skating Rink, Kincaid, SK, with Rev. Linda Tomlinson and Sue Flemming officiating. Mike Harbor read the eulogy. Music was done by Jim Harbor and Kathy Grant. Cavin Harbor was the honorary pallbearer. Active pallbearers were Dustin Hawkins, John Bouffard, Con Wilson, Dave Harbor, Daniel Harbor and Boyd Evans. Interment was held at the Kincaid Cemetery. Donations in Brooke’s memory may be made to the Brooke Harbor Scholarship.
Brooke
When you were little
Auntie Lana had a friend pass away
I’ll never forget your words,
“Boy Mom, Auntie sure was nevastated eh?â€
Well Brooke, I am totally nevastated.
I would love to hear you thump down the hall,
Like a big elephant, slam the fridge door,
Phone or text me insistently, over and over.
I am jealous for all the things we will never share
Shopping for your grad dress,
Your wedding,
Or me getting payback once you had a little girl
Of your own, knowing she’d drive you to the brink.
To my minni me, “I love you.â€
I wish I had more patience with you.
I have so many regrets.
I was so proud of you, you were kind, loving
And most of all frigging hilarious.
You hated my van, called it “the Loser Cruiser.â€
No more worries being seen in that.
I wish that I could have you crawl into bed, kick the covers off
And bang me around while sleeping.
I will love you forever, I like you for always,
As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.
We love you!
Brian and Cheryl
