Passed away suddenly on April 14th, 2009, Leslie Harris, age 95. Leaving to mourn Millicent, his wife of 64 years; daughters: Elayne, Sandra (Colin), Eleanor (Bob); grandchildren: Nola (Brian), Tisha, Nicholas and Josh. Also remembered by his sister-in-law Marie Harris, his nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. He was born at Ragged Head, grew up and was educated in Glovertown. He attended Memorial University College, then taught in many Newfoundland outport schools. He was the first principal of the new Integrated High School in Glovertown, and was pleased to welcome students of all faiths. He particularly enjoyed his time teaching at Buchans High School. After retiring, he was active in the Retired Teachers Association and was instrumental in establishing the central division. He was proud of his role in founding the Children's Charities Project. He was also active in the community, and was the first Town Clerk of Glovetown and later involved with the planning of the first library and the medical clinic. He enjoyed traveling and visiting the nooks and crannies of Newfoundland, as well as visiting his daughters across Canada. He was an avid reader, but also spent many pleasurable hours doing crossword puzzles, trouting, berry picking and setting rabbit slips. Visitation with the family will be at Oram's Funeral Home, Glovertown on Saturday, April 18th from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Faith United Church, Glovertown on Sunday, April 19th at 2 p.m. Interment of his ashes will follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the "Leslie & Millicent Harris Scholarship Fund" through The Bank of Nova Scotia in Glovertown.
