Passed away suddenly, April 8th, 2009, at his residence in Alexandria, Virginia, Derek Edward Power, age 40. Derek leaves to mourn his wife and best friend Tracy Rae (Dunlap); parents Len and Lorraine Power, Mount Pearl; son Jason Hawco of Manuels, CBS; brothers Steve (Heather Kao), Mount Pearl; and Ken (Michelle) Bowling Green, Ohio; very special grandfather and trouting buddy, Harrison Fry of Brigus. In addition to her parents, Mike and Connie Dunlap, and the rest of Tracy's family in West Virginia, Derek will always be remembered by his Brigus family including aunts and uncles Harold Fry (Cynthia), Clarence Fry (Sandra Foley), Keith Fry (Selina), Theresa Hawco, Carol Ann Bishop (Ted), Maureen Bishop (Doug), Marie Ryan (Derrick) and Michelle Redmond (Hubert Porter). His Brigus "family" also includes the Mercer family who spent many wonderful weekends with Derek in Fox Marsh. Derek's family in St. John's include great aunts Vera McDonald (his godmother), Zona Horwood (Welland, Ontario) and Henrietta Ellis (Fraser); Aunt Margo Cranford (Garry); Uncle Brian Power (Veronica Dalley) who was his lifelong friend, confidant and supporter.
Derek leaves as well special niece, Adriana Belle Power, and numerous cousins, friends, co-workers and his namesakes Derek Brown (Cynthia) and Eddie Eastman (Paulette) of Nashville, Tennessee.
Derek had many special friends during his lifetime including cousin Lee Tizzard, Mike Power (his video production mentor and former employer), Todd Byrne, Todd Winsor, Brian Janes, Clyde Pitcher and the Goulds "Panda Pack" Barry & Billie Parsons, Gerry Maddix, Greg Chafe, etc. Derek would want to give special mention to go to his Sea-Cam diving and studio buddies including Doug Manning, Joe Sheehan, Robbie Dawe, Diedre Ayre and many others in the local video production industry at that time. Derek will be welcomed with open arms into heaven by his great grandmothers Catherine "Mom" Power and Clara Fry Roberts; loving grandparents Len and Freda Power, Annie Fry, Madeline Hawco Fry, and special Uncle Sean Martin Power (his godfather).
Cremation of Derek's earthly remains has already taken place in Virginia. As per his request, his ashes will be scattered in and around Brigus by his wife Tracy at a later date. A memorial service to celebrate Derek's life will be held at Barrett's Funeral Home, Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl, 2 PM on Sunday April 19, followed by a reception/social from 3 to 6 PM. All who knew him and loved him and his family are welcome.
