Passed on: May 23rd, 2010

Donald Kemp Ross, 63, of Quebec City, passed away peacefully with his family by his side following a courageous fight against Alzheimer's disease.
Born in St. Peter's, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Donald Kenneth (D.K.) Ross and the late Gena Rankin (Sampson) and the late Angus Rankin.
Kemp graduated from the Canadian Coast Guard College in 1969 and enjoyed a long career. For many years he served as first mate on voyages to the Arctic and in 1974 was appointed captain of the C.C.G.S. Rapid, becoming the youngest captain in the Coast Guard's history.
He later moved to Westmount, Cape Breton to become the cadet administrator at the Coast Guard College, and in 1996 with a Bachelor of Education became an instructor in the navigation program, a post he held until his retirement in 2004.
His passion for the sea continued throughout, as he loved sailing his boat on Cape Breton's Bras d'Or Lakes.
Kemp was respected, admired and loved by family, friends and peers. He was a wonderful father and loyal friend who's consistent positive attitude, jovial laughter, skill of dancing or welcoming love of entertaining, could always be counted on.
