Gerald Farrell, 75, of Sydney, passed away at the Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, on Saturday, May 23, 2009, surrounded by his family, after a courageous bout with cancer.
He was born in Bay du Nord, N.L., to ‘Teacher’ Tom and Frances (Lundrigan) Farrell.
Gerald was employed for many years with Fisheries and Oceans in Newfoundland and later with C.A. Campbell Consultants in Sydney. He was a devoted member of St. Theresa’s parish in Sydney, where he was a member of the Men’s Club and also a member of the Irish Benevolent Society. He was well known in the community, as he loved to meet and talk to everyone. If he didn’t know you at first, he did soon after and he always remembered the names of everyone he met.
He is survived by his sisters, Genevieve, Eileen (late Lawrence) Farrell, Patricia (Pat) Hickey, Alice (Late Fred) Hickey; brothers, Kevin (late Lil) and Alphonsus (Viola). He also leaves a large number of nephews and nieces, of whom he was very fond. He will be especially missed by his nephew Fonce whom he considered more like a son.
He was predeceased by brothers, Pat and Dave.
Visitation for Gerald Farrell will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment at a later date in his beloved Newfoundland.
