Amelia Catherine Prestara, 77, of Sydney, passed away in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Sunday, May 31, 2009, with her family by her side.
Born August 24, 1931 in Sydney, she was the only daughter of the late Sam and Annabelle Rolls.
Amelia spent her early years in Whitney Pier and shortly after marriage, she and her husband, Tony moved to Sydney River where she happily created their first home together and welcomed daughter, Sharon. Several years later, she began a 27 year career with Municipal Ready Mix. Amelia loved her job in the office and with work, came the added bonus of many new friendships. These cherished friends would remain close and provide comfort during her illness. Amelia and Tony would move a second time to their dream retirement home on Blacketts Lake, where they had 16 wonderful years listening to the loons, feeding the geese and waiting to greet the first hummingbird of spring. Mom loved her family and friends. Some of these special friends were of the feline variety, as she always felt a home was more welcoming with a cat. She made a lasting impression on anyone who met her, with her gentle nature and many people would comment to us that she was always a lady. Amelia was proud to be a long standing parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima and a member of the CWL.
She is survived by her soulmate of almost 58 years (June 18), Tony; only child, Sharon Stone and son-in-law, Brent Stone, New Glasgow; brothers, Edgar (Irma), Arizona, Alex (Juanita), Sydney and Johnny (Diane), Sydney; special uncle, John MacKinnon, Amherst; many much loved brothers and sisters-in law; special nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Amelia was predeceased by her brother, Ernest.
A special thank you to the doctors and nurses of palliative care and Dr. Carol Critchley for your wonderful care of Amelia during her illness.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima on Wednesday 2 p.m., with Rev. William MacPherson officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
