Alice "Aaltje" Leyenaar, age 94, of Windsor, formerly of Scotch Village, Hants Co., passed away quietly on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, where she was a resident since 2001. Born on June 20, 1915, in Hemelum, Friesland, The Netherlands, she was the daughter of the late Jan and His (Van De Wetering) Bouma. She lived in Canada most of her life, on dairy farms, first in Cogmagun and later in Scotch Village, having immigrated to this country in April 1948, through Pier 21, arriving in Windsor with her husband, Pieter and three children. She was a member of the Scotch Village United Church, where she sang in the choir and was also a member of the United Church Womens Group. Alice will be remembered for the gift of being able to create anything with her hands, whether it was a sweater, a doily or a bed spread, new curtains, or a new winter coat. In the kitchen, she was famous for her pots of "Dutch Soup" and who could forget "tea time" at "Beppe's". Alice was also an amazing record keeper and a family detective. She had many scrapbooks containing clipping about current events, the Royal Family, and general information that she was always able to recall when needed. Alice is survived by three daughters, His and Susy "Siem" of Campbell River, BC; Akke, Windsor; her son, John of Cambridge; daughter-in-law, Brenda, Windsor; 12 grandchildren, Danny, Suzy, Sally (1), Sherry, Jackie, Tammy, Annette, Patricia, Yurick, John David, Sally (2) and Mary; 7 great grandchildren, Alyce, Celia, Devan, Amber, Travis, Jacob and Samuel; a sister, Akke and three sisters-in-law, Dut, Mette and Siem, all in The Netherlands. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Pieter (2001); her son, Bob "Bauke" (2003); as well as brothers, Gerrit, Halbe and Bauke. Alice has been cremated as by her request, under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 2, 2010. Interment will be with her husband Pieter, in the Scotch Village Community Cemetery, Scotch Village, followed by a reception at the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street, Windsor.
