Bruce Jahnke

JAHNKE - Bruce LeRoi Jahnke was born into the pioneer ranching family of Cornelius and Margretha (Janz) Jahnke on February 21, 1927, in Herbert, SK. He was educated in Herbert and joined the Canadian Army in 1943, serving through to the end of the war. He studied agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan after the war and married Betty Porter Marlin on September 25, 1948. After spending some time ranching he rejoined the Canadian Army in 1950 and was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Canadian Armored Corps (14th Canadian Hussars). Bruce left the Army in 1955 and spent a year in heavy equipment sales with Mumford-Medlin before being certified by the Investment Dealers Association of Canada and joining the well-known firm of James Richardson and Sons where he achieved distinction as a stock-broker at their Regina office. Health concerns caused him to find less stressful work and in late 1958 he took employment as superintendent of the Lebret Metis Farm in the Qu'Appelle Valley where he was a help and friend to many families and especially to many young people. In 1963, Bruce and Betty bought their own farm where they remained until Bruce's retirement. Bruce and Betty moved back to Swift Current in 1981 where he lived until their deaths. Bruce and Betty enjoyed an abundance of friends over the years and took great pleasure in friends and family. Faith played an increasingly important role in Bruce's life as he grew older and he enjoyed his membership in the Eastside Church of God and especially the Bible study he hosted in his home each week for a number of years. Bruce was predeceased in 1986 by his wife, Betty; and is survived by his older son, Boyd (Louisa) Jahnke of Edmonton, AB, and their children, Sarah (Jeff) Amalia, Kate (Luke) Potter, Kirsten (Kent) Potter, Mairi Jahnke, Joshua (Lacie) Jahnke, Bessie Jahnke, Corrie Jahnke and Emma Jahnke: and by his younger son, Greg (Cathy) Jahnke of White City, SK, and their children, Marcel (Jennifer) Gaddie-Jahnke and Megan Jahnke. Bruce was predeceased by a grandson, Christian Jahnke, in 1994. He is survived by nine great-grandchildren. Bruce is also survived by a brother, Elmer (Mary) Jahnke of Morse, SK; and was predeceased by two brothers, Ben (Gudrun) Jahnke and Pete (Sadie & Elizabeth) Jahnke; and by four sisters, Anna Jahnke, Helen (Vic) Wiebe, Olga (Herb) Wiebe and Elizabeth Jahnke. Bruce LeRoi Jahnke went home to his Lord in the early evening on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, entering into the joy of his Master. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at 2:00 pm from the East Side Church of God, Swift Current, SK, with Pastor Dave Smith officiating. "Abide With Me", "In Christ Alone" and "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior" were sung by the congregation. The ushers in the church were James Elias, Madeline Gowan, Jerry Reimer and Erwin Goertzen. The interment service was held at the Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, SK, with the following serving as pallbearers, Ralph Blondeau (friend), Joshua Jahnke (grandson), Kevin Marlin (nephew), Marcel Jahnke (grandson), Neil Jahnke, (nephew), Don Jahnke (nephew), Brian Jahnke (nephew) and Craig Jahnke (nephew).
