Lionel Ruest of Swift Current, passed away with his family and wife of 52 years at his side, at the Cypress Regional Hospital on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at the age of 84 years. Lionel was born on January 14, 1926 on his Mom and Dad's farm in Frenchville. As a young man, Lionel went to college in Gravelbourg and studied latin, music and French. He also played in a band. During college, Lionel played baseball, hockey and enjoyed boxing. It must be said that he was one of the best hockey players around. Lionel was also a very good singer and around the age of 25 he won first place in a talent contest. After college he trained with the Cadets. Lionel then went to help his dad on the farm and a couple years later he bought his own place a couple of miles away. In 1958, Lionel met Alda Carrier and got married on April 7. Together they had eight children. Lionel was then involved in the Co-op, Pioneer Wheat Pool. Lionel also enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, golfing, reading, crib, pool and dancing. In 1999, Lionel sold his farm and bought a cabin at Lac Pelletier and called it his little piece of Heaven. Lionel was very active in the fall in Swift Current with Catholic Men's Choir, curling, bowling, and square dancing. He loved and cherished all meals, especially sweets. His family and grandchildren were his pride and joy first and foremost. If you told him you loved him, he would always say he loved you more. Lionel leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Alda; children; Anita (Wyatt) Evans, and their children Lionel, Bianca and Casandra; Robert Ruest; Charles (Sarah) Ruest and their children, Derick and Diseree; Lea (Dave) Parker and their children Rachel, Samantha and Kimberley; Estelle (Darcey) Lockman and their children Nadine, Jessica and Tristan; Isabelle Ruest and children Rayelle and Paige; grandchildren Kayla, Mark and Cody Ruest; great grandchildren Aiva, Haven and Amber; borthers, sister and numerous in-law, nieces and nephews; He was predeceased by his mother and father, Lea and Leon; his brother Marcellin; sisters Alice, Lilliane and Florence; daughter and son, Lucille and Roland and grandson James. Prayer Service was held Friday, September 17, 2010 with Eileen Zinn officiating. The Resurrection Service took place Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 1:00 pm from Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, Swift Current, Sk with Father Prince Kurisinkal officiating. Organist was Marlene Dolter. Special musical selection was sung by Lorrianne Douville, Gabriel Wilcaw, Daniel Ruest and Jean Begin. Eulogy was presented by David Parker and Wyatt Evans. Ushers were Denis Bedard and Dean Grosenick. Pallbearers were Frank Ruest, Collin Perrault, Norman Packet, Glenn Emms, John Begin and Marcellin Nadeau. Lionel's final resting place was Frenchville Cemetery. Lionel was so much fun to be with. In his memory, friends may make a memorial donation to the Saskatchewan Alzheimer Association.
