Palmer Ruben Hanson born July 25, 1904 in Whitehall, Wisconsin, U.S.A. passed away June 17, 2009 a month shy of his 105th birthday. Palmer, his parents and sister came to the Spruce Home area in 1913 from Minnesota, USA. Palmer homesteaded at Northside, SK. later moving to his parent homestead at Spruce Home in 1941 when he married Frances Lemon Anderson, a local school teacher.
Palmer farmed at Spruce Home where he and Frances raised their children Paul (Eialeen) Hanson, Gail Gravelle (Tony Charnish), Carol Hanson, Ralph (Gerry) Hanson, Martin (Brenda) Hanson. He is also survived by seven Grandchildren: Ginger (Craig) Hanson Koolick, Jennifer (Les) Dziwenka, Birch Hanson, Crystal Hanson, Ashley Hanson, Kenzie Hanson, and Skipp Hanson and four great grandchildren Max, Jelena, Milana, and Thor. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Regina Hanson; sister Olga Reid, brother-in-law Guy Reid; niece Irene Reid Leavitt, mother-in-law Lola Anderson, father-in-law Leigh Lemon, brother-in-law Wilfrid Anderson and sister in-law Patricia Anderson.
Palmer was an avid hunter and loved fishing. He played hard ball in his youth with the Northside and Spruce Home ball teams. He was a carpenter, making furniture and many things around the home including many of Frances frames for her paintings. In 1928 Palmer and his father Peter Hanson and their crew cut and cleared the right-of-way for the road to Waskesiu Lake, now highway 236. For more than 45 years he tended the Spruce Home Cemetery caring for the grounds and as director.
He will be missed by many family and friends.
