STELLARTON – With great sadness we announce the death of Pearl MacMillan, 55, of Stellarton, NS, at the Aberdeen Hospital on November 11, 2010.
Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of Flo (Smith) Ives and the late David Ives.
Pearl was a graduate of the Stellarton High Secretarial Program and spent most of her working life in Medical and Dental offices. She was a tech at Poulain’s Pharmacy and had just recently opened a business in her home servicing Breast Cancer Patients. Pearl was very active in her community. She held all executive positions in the Kinette Club of New Glasgow, serving as President three times, Zone 8 Kinette Coordinator, Kinette coordinator for Kinettes of the Atlantic Provinces as well as serving on the Kinette National Board of Directors. She was elected the first life member of the Kinette Club of New Glasgow. Pearl was a 15 year survivor of breast cancer, was active in the Women Alike Support Group, made presentations locally and nationally to medical professionals about the importance of early diagnosis and prevention. She was also involved in counselling cancer patients. She enjoyed paddling and was a driving force behind the acquisition of the Abreast a River Boat.
Pearl is survived by her husband, Bill, Stellarton; sons: Matt (Amber Comisso), Kingston, Ont; Mark (Ashley MacDonald), Calgary; a granddaughter, Tessa Victoria, Kingston, Ont; brothers: Brian (Elizabeth Ormond), Heatherton; John (Tammy), Lower Sackville; sisters: Joanne and Jean, both of Stellarton; mother-in-law, Reta MacMillan, New Glasgow; and several much loved nieces and nephews.
Her remains will rest in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton, for visiting from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday from the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, with Rev. Charles McPherson presiding. Reception to follow in the church hall. Cremation to take place with a private family committal service to take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Pearl may be made to The Women Alike Support Group, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Palliative Care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital or to a charity of one’s choice.
Special thanks to Drs. Farrell, Solimon and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for their support and compassion. We are also thankful to the doctors, nurses and staff of 9A of the Centennial Building of the VG Hospital for their care.
