MELMBERBY BEACH – Joseph Fellows Dickie, 76 of Melmerby Beach, Pictou County, passed away Friday, November 12, 2010, as a result of Multiple Myeloma in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, NS.
Joe was born in Kingsport, Nova Scotia to the late Ethel (Rand) Dickie and the late Joseph Dickie.
Joe grew up in Kingsport, N.S. and graduated from Kings County Academy in Kentville in 1952.
Joe joined the RCMP in the fall of 1952 and for the next 30 years served in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Joe’s last posting was in New Glasgow where he was in charge of the Detachment on Westville Rd. and proudly, under his command, moved to a new building in Stellarton in 1979.
Upon retirement, Joe took up the hobby of repairing small engines and was never happier than when he was in his workshop, putting machinery back in good working order. God could use this handyman in Heaven now.
Joe and his wife Jean spent the last 28 winters in Apollo Beach, Florida, where they made a host of close friends, and considered it their second home.
Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean (Price) Dickie, Melmerby Beach; son, Gregory (Glenda) Dickie, St. John’s, NFLD; daughters, Pamela (Alan) Power, New Glasgow; Gillian Dickie, Toronto; Ontario.
Joe was so very proud of his children and equally proud of his four grandchildren: Charlotte and Alexander Dickie of St. John’s; Kyle and Kara Power, New Glasgow.
Joe is also survived by one brother, William (Denise) Dickie, Cornwall, ON; two sisters, Sally (Jim) Haverstock, Kentville; Nancy (John) Simpson, Halifax, N.S; brother-in-law, Bill (Elizabeth) Price, Simcoe, ON; sister-in-law, Joan Gentle, London, ON.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Joe Dickie and brother-in-law, Ronald Gentle.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Farrell and assistants of the Palliative Care Unit, Dr. Gregor MacLean, staff of the Medical Day Unit all of Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow and many Canadian and Florida friends who walked the final journey with Joe. Your kindness and support were so much appreciated and made the journey more bearable.
Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to the Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
The family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2010 and 11-11:45 a.m. Tuesday November 16, 2010 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, followed by a memorial service at 12 p.m. Tuesday with Fergie MacKay presiding. A reception to follow in the Angus Funeral Home. Burial of ashes will take place at 3 p.m. in the Church Brook Cemetery, Little Harbour.
Donations in memory of Joe may be made to the Palliative Care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital or to a charity of one’s choice.
