
John Stanley Clyke
Clyke, John Stanley - 83, of Truro passed away Tuesday, November 23, 2010, in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Truro, John was a son of the late James and Hazel (Byard) Clyke. John was a porter and conductor with the CNR and VIA Rail, retiring in 1983, after 38 years of service. One of John's career highlights was when he was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II to deliver the satchel containing the invitation to the 1986 Vancouver World Exposition. He was a member of the Zion United Baptist Church, where for several years could always be found in their kitchen. He was a former member of the Zion Men's Brotherhood. John was also a member of Branch # 26 of the Royal Canadian Legion, where until his illness, loved to prepare the senior's dinners and was known for his tasty gravy. He was a member of the NS Liberal Party. In 1974, John ran for a seat on the Truro Town Council. John was a kind and compassionate person who will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. John is survived by his loving children, daughter, Leslie (Yves), Montreal; sons, Sheldon (Kim), Dartmouth, John Miles (Kim), Ottawa; sisters, Frances Mills-Clements, Bridgetown, Olive (Wilfred), Dartmouth; brother, Gerald (Linda), Sudbury. John had nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by brothers, James, Wilfred, Robert, Leslie and Roman. John was recently predeceased by his loving wife Muriel on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for both John and Muriel, beginning with a Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service will be held on Sunday, November 28th at 2:00 pm in the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. Visitation will be held before the service from 1 to 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Zion United Baptist Church Building Fund, Royal Canadian Branch Legion Branch 26 Auxiliary, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.
