It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Charlie Black on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Leon and Ella (MacLean) Black.
Charlie served in the Navy overseas with the Merchant Marines. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12. He was employed with Sydney Steel until his retirement, and was the acting chief draftsman. Charlie was the past president of the Red Cross.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Marilyn (Poirier) Crane; his children, Cynthia Watanabe, Seattle, Wash., Joanne Black, Langley, B.C., and Leon (Marie) Black, Langley, B.C.; his stepchildren, Kimberly (Scott) Fitzgerald, Dingwall, Timothy Crane, Sydney. He is also survived by his sister, Loreen Szewczok, Sydney; his pride and joy, his grandchildren who know him as 'Papa Charlie' Amy, Nicole, Jeffery, Megan, Kelli and Taylor; his three great-grandchildren, Kayla, Logan and Landon; two special nieces, April McGrath and Rachelle McGrath as well as his special friend and neighbour, Jack.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A celebration of life for Charlie will follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow. Interment to take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre Patient Services Fund.
