Milton Veniot

With sorrowful hearts, the family of Milton Joseph Veniot announces his peaceful passing on January 24th at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, NS. Born in Pictou on January 9, 1944, Milton was the eldest of ten children born to Milton C. and Helen (Chisholm) Veniot. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Laurel Holliday and brother Robert (Bobby) Veniot.
Left to mourn the love of her life is his partner of 23 years, Norma Nixon. Surviving brothers are Paul (Carolyn) and Eric (Terry), Pictou; Michael (Rhonda), Kamloops, BC and sisters Avis Ross, Pictou; Janice (Alan) Veniot Bell, Caribou Island and Florida; Kathy (Marcel) Muise, Tusket; and Maureen (Walter) Yeadon, Brookside, and many nieces and nephews.
Milton knew from a very early age that he wanted a career in law. He pursued his education at Pictou Academy, earned his Bachelor of Arts at St. Francis Xavier University and his Law Degree at Dalhousie University. He continued his education at the University of Southampton, England where he earned his Masters of Philosophy. After living in England for two years he returned to Nova Scotia where he was called to the bar in 1970. He was named Queen's Counsel in 1986 and practiced law in Halifax for 20 successful years.
Milton clearly knew how he wanted to live his life and he did so. Always disciplined in whatever he chose to do, he earned his black belt in Shoto Kai karate and taught it for many years. In 1990 he returned to his home town to base his practice in Pictou County. He and Norma spent several years restoring, renovating, and landscaping his beautiful 1867 Victorian family home in Pictou. They enjoyed their summers at "the cottage" on Caribou Island where Milton loved swimming at the Dragline beach, rowing his single skull and taking long walks with a book.
His law practice flourished in Pictou County and through his persistence and dedication to resolving conflict and his detailed understanding of law he became a well-known labour mediator and arbitrator, bringing peace to many labour strikes.
Thank you to the VON, Dr. Gordon Young and to Dr. Gerry Farrell and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital.
Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Amnesty International.
Arrangements are entrusted to McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, with public visitation on Saturday, January 29th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. A private burial will take place.
