GROSS: Lawrence (Larry) Leonard, age 96 of Swift Current, Sk (formerly of Hodgeville, Sk) passed away Monday, August 24, 2009 at the Regina General Hospital. The family held a graveside service at 3:30 PM at the Herbert Community Cemetery on Friday, August 28, 2009 with Father Leo Mann (Nephew) officiating. The Eulogist was Gerald Gross nephew. The Pallearers were Gerald Gross, Barry Young, Bob Switzer, Frank Lithicum, Frank Bauman and Jonathan Thomason. Survived by sons Donald and Ian, daughter Inez (Ron) Steinley and family, selected grandson Jonathan and great-granddaugter Emma Thomason, sisters Laura (Mueller), Florence (Fournier), Adelaide (Gross), Irma (Dighans), Edith (Corrigan), brothers Ray (Norma) and Leo and sister-in-law Bea Gross, numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents John and Mary Gross, wife Hilda, son Fred, brothers Hugo, John and Arthur, sisters Mary and Annie, sisters-in-law Jacqueline Gross, Edith Gross, Anne Gross, Katherine Demar and Myra Shepherdson, brothers-in-law Anton Mann, Joe Mann, Paul Mueller, Albert Fournier, John Dighans, Vince Corrigan, Fred Demar and Jack Shepherdson as well as several nieces and nephews. Born at Morse Hospital on March 6, 1913. Atttended school at Norfolk School, near the homestead. Married Hilda Gertrude Kaufman on December 14, 1939 at Hodgeville, Sk. Employed at various grain elevators in southern Saskatchewan and then he farmed at Hodgeville, Sk (Wiwa Creek Farms). They moved to Swift Current in the winter of 1981 and he continued to farm for several years thereafter with his son Ian, at Rush Lake, Sk. Larry held a lifetime membership with the Elks, was president of the Southwest Angus Club, received the Saskatchewan Angus Heritage Award in 2003 and the Canadian Angus Association 50 years plaque in 2006. The Saskatchewn Livestock Association acknowledged his contribution to the community and the livestock industry in 2007. Some previous accomplishments were starting the Ferland Credit Union and being a founding member of the Assiniboia Co-op Association. Larry's special interests were Black Angus Cattle, baseball and sports. One of his life's accomplishments (and a dream fulfilled) was the "Short Grass Black Angus Bull Sale". He also kept up with the daily news and loved visiting/discussing any of the above with anyone. He was an avid ballplayer in his younger years and his pitching was noticed by a scout for a Canadian Major Baseball League in the early thirties but he declined, in order to keep his full time job buying grain at Ferland.
