Remo Gatto, late of Dominion, died peacefully at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility on Sept. 14, 2009, arising from complications after a struggle with cancer.
Son of the late Rafaelle and Maria (Marin) of Riese, Italy, he is survived by his children, Margo (Bob Hoiss), Marc and Cynthia (Kevin MacDonald); granddaughters, Camille and Rhea Gatto; Maria and Erica Hoiss; Alexandra and Kayleigh MacDonald; and great-grandson, Luca Hanson.
He was predeceased by his wife, Myrna, parents, brother, Fr. Edo Gatto and grandson, Andrew.
A graduate of St. FX (BA, B.Ed) and post-graduate degrees from Dalhousie (administration and reading). He taught for many years at Mt. Carmel and Scotchtown where he was principal and active in his union.
Remo was an active community leader and volunteer including being Dominion town councillor. He was the band officer, then commanding officer of the New Waterford Sea Cadet Corp. He was also a talented musician, playing in several local bands. He was a founding member the Lions Club in Dominion and a life-time member and past-president of the Italian Hall. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, photography, astronomy, walking on the boardwalk and spending time with his friends.
He loved to travel, but, was happiest when home in Cape Breton.
Remo was a kind and gentle soul who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will take place at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday, Sept. 20, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass at St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21. Officiating will be Fr. Jim Attwood.
