It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of well-known resident Gerald A. Yetman, 83, on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at Taigh Na Mara in Glace Bay, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Montreal, he was the son of the late James and Gladys (Bone) Yetman.
Gerald was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church and a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Merchant Marines.
He came to North Sydney in 1948, worked as a contractor in the local area and became active with the Carpenters Union in the 1960s, was president of the North Sydney Local, and served five years as president of the Cape Breton District Labour Council. Gerald joined Canadian Union of Public Employees as a national representative in 1975 and worked with CUPE in Halifax, New Glasgow and Sydney, for the next 15 years. Gerald was elected as the first full-time president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour.
As part of his community service, he served as president of the North Sydney Credit Union, the Bras d’Or Co-Op Society, was a life-member and served on the executive of Branch 19 Royal Canadian Legion, served for years on the Cape Breton United Way board of directors, the Bras d’Or Fish and Game Society, a school trustee Cape Breton County School Board, president of home and school association, active in community and church work on the Northside.
He was presented a Commemorative Medal for 125th anniversary of Canada by the governor general in 1993. He was president of the Cape Breton branch of the Merchant Navy Association and served as first vice-president National Association of Merchant Mariners, former councillor and deputy warden of Victoria County. Gerald was a longtime proud member of the NDP and CCF.
He is survived by his daughters, Heather (Tom) Patterson, Geraldine (Bill) Hollohan, both of Sydney, Lorna (Gary) Romeo, Lynn (Lennie ) Ivey, both of Sydney Mines, Sheila Yetman, Fort McMurray; son, Jamie (Colette) Yetman, Sydney Mines; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Doug) Bond, Ryan and Jessica Hollohan, Mark and Tim Patterson, Brendan Dugas, Matthew Romeo, Catherine, Erica, Mia, Ava Yetman; brothers, Buster (June) Yetman and Bob Yetman, both of Halifax; sisters, Avis (Neil) Wentzell, Audrey (John) Rompkey, both of Halifax; brother-in-law, John MacLeod; also close friend, Arthena Tobin and her sons, Terry, Maurice, Troy and Derrick.
Gerald was predeceased by his wife, Marie (Bona) Yetman and sisters, Sheila and Lorna, son-in-law, Billy MacLeod.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay for the excellent care given our father during the past three years.
Visitation for Gerald will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. A reception will be held following the funeral at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19.
Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Local Food Banks or charity of one’s choice.
