It is with deep sadness that we wish to announce the passing of Margaret Violet Vickers (Ratchford) on Dec. 12, 2009. Margaret died quietly and peacefully at home as was her wish.
Margaret was born in North Sydney in 1917, the daughter of John W. and Margaret Ratchford.
She was the last surviving member of her family, having been predeceased by brothers, Rev. Russell, Dr. Harold, Earl, Douglas, Lorne, Donnie, and sisters, Mildred and Mary Vivian. Margaret was educated at Mount Saint Bernard, Antigonish, and prior to her marriage she worked in Ottawa as a senatorial assistant.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband and best friend, George who passed away in 2003, and their son, Peter Francis (Christene) who died tragically at Westray in 1992.
George and Margaret are survived by children, Mildred (Tom) D’Arcy, George (Myra), Harold, Paul (Karen), Madonna (Kevin); 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Until the end, Margaret remained keenly interested and involved in the lives of her family. She was a gracious hostess and her home was the focal point of all family gatherings. She looked so forward to the frequent visits of family, friends and many relatives.
Margaret was a member of St. Joseph’s parish, Port Hawkesbury, and throughout her lifetime remained a most active participant.
Visitation will take place at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, Monday, Dec.14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Fr. Andrew Boyd officiating.
