Dwight Miller passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility on Friday January 1, 2010.
Born in Glace Bay on August 18th, 1950, he was the son of the late John and Georgina (MacDonald) Miller. He was a member of St. Anne's Parish in Glace Bay.
Dwight was a police officer in the former Town of Dominion from 1972 - 1995. In 1972 he began his policing career as a patrol officer. In 1980 he assumed the rank of Deputy Chief Of Police where he continued this role throughout his career. During his time as a police officer, Dwight was the founder of the Dominion Police Boys and Girls Club and the Dominion Safe Grad Program. He enjoyed wood working and gardening. Most of all, he enjoyed spending every available moment with his family and grandchildren.
Dwight is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 37 years, Judy (Cann); daughter Tamara (Paul) MacKinnon of Dominion; son Dwight (Tammy) Miller of Gardiner Mines; three grandchildren Paul Gregory and Alyssa MacKinnon and Gracie Miller who were the pride and joy of his life; mother-in-law Flo Cann and brother-in-law Timmy Cann who resided with him; two brothers Jimmy (Fran) Nichol of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Gary Nichol of Ontario; special aunt and uncle Billy and Jean (Toots) of Glace Bay; stepmother Shirley Miller of Glace Bay.
Besides his parents, Dwight was predeceased by his father-in-law and best friend Jimmy Cann.
Visitation will be held at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., in Glace Bay from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Monday January 4, 2010. Funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5th, 2010 at St. Anne's Church in Glace Bay with Rev. Leo Boone and Rev. Jake Andrea Officiating. Burial to follow in St. Anne's Cemetery.
