Ken passed away in Regina, SK on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the age of 62 years. Ken was born in Moose Jaw, SK on July 16, 1947 to Walter and Marguerete Sagal of Marquis, SK. He graduated from St. Mark’s School in Marquis in 1965. He then studied at St. Peter’s College in Muenster, SK, the U of S, U of R, Canberra College of Advanced Education in Australia and received a Bachelor of Arts, Graduate Studies in English, Bachelor of Education and Masters Degree in Library Science. Due to his illness, his Masters program at the University of Regina in Social Studies was not completed. Ken began his outstanding career at Sagal Brothers as parts manager/pilot after he completed high school. He then traveled to Africa where he taught English for CUSO in Ghana. He returned to Regina to teach English at Thom Collegiate. Travels then took him to Australia where he was teacher/librarian and manager of library loans in Canberra College of Education. He worked at the Canadian High Commission in Canberra as Public Affairs Assistant. In 1979, he returned to Moose Jaw as Head Librarian at STI. In 1987, he became Registrar and Dean of Student Services. In 1991, he accepted the role of SIAST Senior Policy Advisor where he was project leader of the Banner student record system implementation. In 1994, he was appointed Dean of Student Services SIAST Palliser Campus. From 1995 – 1998, Ken was Director of Credit Transfer with the Department of Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training. From 1998 – 2005, he held the position of Policy Advisor, International Office; Acting Executive Director, University Relations; and Assistant Director of Information Services. From 2005 – 2009, he was SunGard Higher Education Account Manager for Western Canada. For Ken’s tireless volunteer work, including being a member, chair, vice-president and president of various library boards and organizations; a member and chair of the Saskatchewan Arts Board; and his board membership and presidency (1996-1997) of Sask Culture, he was decorated with the Centennial Medal in 2005 and the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal in 2008. Ken was an avid sailor, loved motorcycling, skiing, hunting, running and reading. In 2007, Ken was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. He endured extensive treatment and wrote and published his incredible story “The Cancer Wars” online (web.mac.com/sagalk/Site/The_Cancer_Wars/The_Cancer_Wars.html). Ken was predeceased by his father Walter; his sister Christine; and his brother Donnie. He is survived by his wife Jane; stepchildren Gareth, Jeremy and Ksenia (Peter); his daughter Tonya Lowe (John) of Banff, AB; his mother Marguerete Sagal of Moose Jaw, SK; brother Robert of Calgary, AB (Denise), daughter Courtney, and stepdaughter Christy (Tyler) and their children Cierra, Jaden and Connor; brother Murray of Calgary (Tracy) and sons Jeff and Dawson; and nephew Jason Sagal of Lloydminster, AB. Donations in Ken’s memory may be made to the Saskatchewan Arts Board, 1355 Broad Street, Regina, SK S4R 7V1 for the purchase of a work of art to be donated in Ken’s memory to the Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital - OR - to the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, “Patient Comforts”, 20 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N 4H4. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East, Regina, SK on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to sign the online book of condolences at www.regina-memorial.ca.
