Mumford, Harry Miller, 86, born December 21, 1923 passed away February 5, 2010 in the Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax, where he resided since last June. He is also survived by his brother Charles of Mount Uniacke and many nieces and nephews. His niece, Jean Fletcher, provided support and friendship in his latter years. He was predeceased by his brothers Walter, Reid, Norman and Gordon. He served overseas in the Second World War with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and was wounded during the liberation of Holland. Upon returning from war, Harry worked in the woods and sawmills. Later, he married and along with his wife, raised their family in Lower Truro. He worked in the Marshlands Division of the federal (M.M.R.A.) and provincial governments, retiring as Aboiteau Superintendent. He was an active member of the First United Church and served in many roles. He was a trustee of the Lower Truro Community Hall, a founding member of the Cobequid Fire Brigade, a Legion member, and longtime member of the I.O.O.F. He thoroughly enjoyed family and friends with always a story to tell or a drive to take. Young at heart, and up for an adventure, he had an active life, which included many excursions with dear friends Lee Blaikie and Neil Morash. He also had a serious side and the life he led reflected his strong faith and family values. This quality was never more apparent than in the years he cared for his wife after she was diagnosed with Alzheimers. "I am the daughter of Harry's friend John at the VMB. I would visit Harry whenever I went to see my dad. He was my dad's best friend there, and it was so consoling to see my father had such a loyal friend so quickly. Even though we knew him briefly, he is already sorely missed!"
