Passed on: February 10th, 2010

Lowell Thomas Pearson of 28 Cameron St., New Victoria, died at 3:15 a.m. on Feb. 10, 2010, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born in New Victoria on May 5, 1940, he was the son of the late Gordon and Constance ‘Mallie’ (Cameron) Pearson.
Lowell was a member of the former St. Joseph’s parish, New Victoria.
In addition to being the best husband, father, grandfather, uncle, son, brother and friend one could ever have, Lowell was an extraordinary personality with tremendous wit and humour. Never short for words and always quick with a joke or story to share, Lowell was a true original who shall be so very sadly missed by his loyal and loving family and friends. His laughter will forever remain in our hearts.
When it came to his family, there was nothing Lowell wouldn’t do to ensure the happiness and well-being of his true love and wife, Vera, and children by endlessly giving his love, support and profound wisdom.
A master craftsman, he could turn his hand to pretty much anything. The crack of dawn and a broken heart are exceptions to what he could repair or modify. One was left to marvel at his abilities to problem-solve and critically think.
Lowell owned and operated L. Pearson Construction and later went on to form Victoria Builders Ltd. with his best friend and son, Gordon, by his side. Sadly, Gordie’s sudden death in 2008 marked the end of an era. Although Lowell officially died of complications due to congestive heart failure, most would claim that he died from a broken heart.
He was both president and union steward of the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Union, Local 611 of New Waterford and District, now Local 1588 in Sydney, for both Port Hawkesbury and Glace Bay heavy water plants, respectively. Lowell also donned the hat of general foreman.
An outstanding outdoorsman, Lowell’s passions were nature and hunting. Communing with nature brought him great joy and solace, be it in woods or upon water’s shores. He respected life’s natural beauty with its furred and feathered friends. At home, he treasured his two Chihuahuas, Joe and Foo-Foo. He also enjoyed fishing with his grandsons, gardening, and yard work. In his earlier years, Lowell had been a fine amateur boxer.
The consummate warrior, Lowell fought a good fight before leaving this world, surrounded by his wife and daughters whom he adored. He died in the light of peace, love and God, with Archbishop Hayes attending his spiritual passing.
Lowell is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Vera Ratchford; daughters, Linda, Toronto, Nicole (Ian) Nearing, Beaverbank, Lower Sackville, Debbie Lee (Kenny), Glace Bay, Amanda, Dartmouth; one brother, Sonny (Selena), Toronto and daughter-in-law, Barbara, New Waterford. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Candace, Cameron, Coleton, Brenan, Haylee, Ryan, and two step-grandchildren, Chantel and Cortney.
He was predeceased by his cherished son, Gordie, and dear sister, Ave Maria.
Visitation for Lowell will be held Sunday from 2–4, 7–9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A celebration of Lowell’s life, officiated by Fr. Doug MacDonald and Deacon Leo Penny, will take place at the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford on Monday at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, followed by a reception at St. Agnes Hall.
As an expression of sympathy for Lowell, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation and the local S.P.C.A.
Online condolences to the Pearson family can be expressed through the funeral home website www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
God saw you getting tired,
And a cure was not to be,
So He put his arms around you,
And whispered, “Come to Me”.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke our heart to prove to us
He only takes the best.
