On Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, Harvey passed away suddenly while visiting with his son, daughter-in-law and infant granddaughter in Bermuda.
Born in Sydney, N.S., on Aug. 22, 1946, Harvey was the son of the late Emilio and Helen (Shaugharue) Ranni.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 42 years and the love of his life, Elizabeth (Lewis); two sons and one daughter, Richard (Cindy Bragg) Bermuda, Stephen (Juanita Seymour), Sydney, and Suzanne, Calgary, and one granddaughter, Alexis Sydney, Bermuda. Harvey is survived by his nine siblings, Sheldon (Mary Fitzgerald) Sydney, Carol (Doug MacPherson), Forth Smith, Verne, Mexico, David (Joan Baldwin) Sydney, Donald, Sydney, Basil (Carol MacAskill), Sydney, Dalyce (Eric Hazlewood), Cole Harbour, Paul (Sandy Savoy), Sydney, and Helen Marie Allen, Halifax. He is also survived by his extended family, Fred (Joanne) Lewis, Ron (Linda) Lewis, Len (Pat) Lewis, Ruphina (Gerald) Moir, Paul (Joan Haché) Lewis, Duncan (Brenda) Lewis and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Harvey was a true entrepreneur with many businesses over the years including Executive Office Equipment, Allied Truck Rentals, RanMac Rentals, Computers On, Mira Road Video and Pizza, Triple R Liquidators (he was the first cellular dealer on Cape Breton Island), and Seasoned Jewellery and Gifts, as well as a wonderful landlord to many tenants.
Harvey dearly loved Cape Breton. Many of the best times in his life were spent entertaining family and friends at his cottage in Grand Mira South where everyone was welcome and treated to countless adventures. Over the last 12 years he divided his time between Cape Breton and Florida. He was a true ambassador for the island and never missed a chance to brag about its beauty and musical talent. Harvey and Elizabeth hosted “Cape Breton Day” in Florida over the past five years, an event which attracted more than 2,000 people over that period.
Harvey taught by example. He loved his family and friends dearly. He always made himself available to anyone who sought him out. His motto in life was there is good in every person and everyone deserved a second chance.
Visitation will take place Monday, Feb. 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney with the funeral mass at St. Anthony Daniel at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16 , 2010.
