Michael "Mel" Taweel

After a rich full life, Michael “Mel” Taweel, past away peacefully, with his loving wife, Lila, by his side. He was in his 81st year. Mel spent the first 10 years of his life in Cuba before immigrating to Prince Edward Island with his family. His earlier years were spent working in his parent’s grocery store, learning the skills he would later use with his own business. In 1954, Mel married Lila and started a family of his own. Shortly after their marriage, they opened Mel’s Grocery at the corner of University Avenue and Kirkwood Drive. For the next 33 years Mel worked hard, over many long hours to support his family and grow his business. In September 1989 Mel closed the store and then retired. Mel was a man of integrity who believed in the value of hard work and instilled a strong work ethic in each of his four children. He had a quick wit and dry sense of humor and loved to laugh. In recent years his sense of humor never failed him, even when his health was compromised. His ability to laugh and smile in the face of challenge is but one of his many traits that will be greatly remembered and greatly missed by his family and friends. Mel is survived by his wife, Lila and their four children, Jeannette, James (Lois), Stephen and Douglas (Tracey). His two grandchildren, Robert and Emily, will also greatly miss him. Mel was one of nine children and was predeceased by his parents, Nakaad and Badia Taweel and brother, James. He is survived by siblings, Amelia, Solomon (Vera), Hanna, Peter (Diane), Paul (Barbara), Helen (Ray) and Abdullah (Karen), along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Joseph Jabbour and George Ghiz. Mel lived a full life. His family and friends were blessed to have known and loved him. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Beach Grove Home for their dedication and caring.
