John, Ed.D.. The Man Who Taught Young Canada to Read. When literacy instruction in elementary schools took a significant new turn in Newfoundland and Labrador in the late 1960s, the province was fortunate to have Dr. John McInnes to play a leading role. For over three decades he championed innovative methods in literacy education for our young, and his presence continues to be felt by literacy teachers in the province and across Canada. Author, literacy educator and theorist, mentor, innovator, poet, puppeteer. Born in Fort William (Thunder Bay) Ontario on August 26, 1927, died at St. Joseph's Hospital, Toronto, Ontario on March 1, 2008 at the age of 80.
