BLACK POINT/DARTMOUTH - James Henry Inglis (Jim) "Lefty" MacVicar died peacefully Friday, May 18, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay, May 4th, 1933, he was the son of Charles and Edith (Anderson) MacVicar. Married in 1957 to Isabel (Townsend), Lefty was a generous, caring and loving husband, father and grandfather. Together they raised their four children: Kathy (Jamie) Naugler (Hilden), Janet (Fredericton), Jamie (Rhonda) (Dartmouth), and Andrew (Sherry) (Dartmouth), and enjoyed their seven grandchildren: Sarah, Jeremy, Derek Naugler, Rachel and Alec MacVicar, and Keegan and Kaleb MacVicar. His interest in his children's and grandchildren's sports offered many hours of enthusiastic involvement and being called 'Grampy' brought him a special joy. A graduate of Acadia University class of '55, and BEd '56, he taught physical education at Oxford Regional High School and in Dartmouth at Dartmouth High and Ellenvale Junior High. He excelled as an athlete in baseball, rugby, and hockey. He played junior baseball with Glace Bay #11 Antonians in the early '50s, a team that was inducted into the Cape Breton Sport Heritage Hall of Fame in 2003. He was scouted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1952, and pitched for Stellarton Albions in the H&D League in 1953. He played hockey with the Glace Bay Junior Miners in 1951-52, returning to Acadia for three years to play Varsity hockey, and was later inducted to the Acadia Hockey Honour Roll in 1998. He received many awards and accolades for his enthusiasm and commitment to coaching and volunteering with school teams and community recreation programs. He was the NSSAF Regional Director from 1979-1984, coached the 1967 Nova Scotia Women's Basketball team at the Canada Games in Montreal and volunteered at the 1969 Canada Summer Games and the 1983 Pan American Wheelchair Games in Halifax. He is survived by his brothers, Charles (Arlene) Glace Bay, Donald (Ann) Bedford, sister, Martha (Toronto) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Charles (1957), mother, Edith (1972), sister, Katherine Austin (1997) and brother, Neil (2000). The family is deeply grateful to neighbours, friends and the doctors and nurses who have been so supportive during Lefty's illness. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 22nd, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Angus Funeral Home, 256 King Street, New Glasgow, with funeral services at the First United Church in Trenton on Wednesday, May 23rd, at 2 p.m. A committal service will be held at a later date.
