Martin was born January 26, 1931 in Flisa, Norway. On the advice of his uncle, he immigrated to Canada in 1949 in hopes of furthering his education and enhancing job opportunities. He worked a variety of jobs including working construction on the Duncairn Dam and a local bridge on the No. 1 Highway, working in the CPR mailcar during a Christmas rush and as a farm labourer for his uncles. Martin married Doris Head on October 3, 1953. The newlyweds, keen to become farmers, first rented, and later purchased in 1959, the Bert Sather farm. They raised turkeys, milked cows and fattened a few steers for six years. This provided capital to purchase more farm land and expansion continued over the years. A thriving feed lot was established and grew. Martin was also proud that Sather Farms Charolais Ltd. produced prize-winning cattle. The farm was all-consuming, with Martin striving to be on the cutting edge of new breeds of cattle, improved varieties of crops and innovative fertilizers and feeding methods. In the few moments that were left free Martin enjoyed gardening, tending his roses, fishing and keeping abreast of local and international news. He embraced his friends and family, delighted to act as host for gatherings, wearing his apron and wielding his barbecue tongs. Martin was a part of the farming decisions right up to his death.
