It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Robert Frederick Harold McDonald, age 77 of Artillery Place, Halifax NS on Saturday February 25, 2012 at the QEII Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site. He was born in Amherst, NS on February 14th 1935, the son of the late Cecil Phillip McDonald and the late Eliza Mary (Cormier) McDonald of Amherst, NS.
After graduating high school, Robert joined the Air Force, during which time he made the decision to join the seminary. After some years studying to become a priest, Robert left the seminary to attend the University of Windsor Fine Arts School in Ontario. Upon graduation, he taught Cosmetology in Ontario, Amherst, NS and later in Halifax, NS. Within his degree in Cosmetology, Robert opened his own hair dressing shop, where he made many lasting friendships over the years. In his spare time, he enjoyed expressing himself and his accomplishments through art. His artistic abilities also lead him to a brief opportunity to teach Art at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB. He took pleasure in his success with painting, which he continued until his retirement. After retirement, Robert went on to further his education achieving a Masters in Theology in Halifax, NS.
Robert was predeceased by his partner of 30 years, Robert M. Wilson, on April 9th 2002 of Halifax, NS. He is survived by his sister Shirley M. Wheaton (Al Bernard), Dorchester, NB; his nephew Kim (Kimberly) Wheaton his great nieces Katelyn and Megan Wheaton, Fenwick, NS; and nephew Brian Wheaton (Tam Meldrum), Saskatoon, SK., as well as extended family. He was also predeceased by his grandparents Alice (Robichaud) and Albert Cormier, and Dometille (Gauthier) and Alexander W. McDonald, uncles, aunts and cousins.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish, 63 Church Street, Amherst, NS on Friday, March 2nd, 2012 at 10:00 am with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Internment will take place in Saint Charles Parish Cemetery, Amherst, NS at a later date. Family flowers only, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and/or Chalice - a catholic sponsorship and development organization working to alleviate the effects of poverty in the developing world.
