Passed in: Carleton Village
Passed on: May 12th, 2013

MacKENNEY, John “Jack” Munroe, Carleton Village, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, May 12, 2013. Born in Carleton Village on May 14, 1927, he was a son of the late John Lloyd and Hazel Oneita (Munroe) MacKenney. His education took him from Gunning Cove to Shelburne High. Then on to Acadia University where he first took engineering, but not giving him enough time to pursue his recreational activities, he changed to a teaching degree. While teaching he would have long summer vacations for his fishing with his fishermen friends. Always being interested in sports such as duck hunting, deer hunting, fishing, skeet shooting, and old muzzle loaders, he was a founding father of Beaverdam. In later life his love of sports showed in teaching children archery. His teaching career started in Woods Harbour, Barrington, and then Shelburne. Several summers Jack attended Toronto University and Harvard University in Boston to further his teaching career. After many years of teaching he took the position of Superintendent of Schools for the area. His governmental offices took him from Councillor of the Municipality to Warden. Although Jack never married, with children of his own, he had an extensive loving family: sisters, Shirley and Yvonne, nieces and nephews, James, Pamela, Lori, Susan, Joanne and Frank, and 13 great nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will take place at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne, with Pastor Cindy Dunnett officiating, on Friday, May 17 at 2 p.m. Interment at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Community Fund, and Kids Fair Play Fund, c/o Municipality of Shelburne. A reception will follow at the Gunning Cove Fire Hall. Everyone welcome.
