It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Evelyn Mary (Gale) Russell on Monday, May 20, 2013 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Port au Port, Newfoundland, on March 20, 1926. She was a daughter of the late Cornelius and Edith (Doucette) Gale and stepmother Ethel Duphney.
Evelyn was a former resident of the Gannon Road, North Sydney. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Mom worked in her younger years as a convenience store clerk and often spoke about that special time in her life. Mom bragged about her great ability to out spell anyone who dared to challenge her. She also looked forward to family visits, which often erupted in a game of cribbage.
Mom is survived by her sons Edward (Martha), Millville, Gregory (Vicki), Comox, B.C., Glenn (Pamela) North Sydney, Alex (Marlaene), North Sydney, Benny, North Sydney. Also by daughters Anne (Kenneth) Donovan, North Sydney, Laurie Meaney, Sydney Mines, Ernestine (Michael) Hollohan, Sydney, Elaine Hall, Halifax, Eileen (Byron) Stubbert, Florence with whom she resided. Nanny will be missed by her 25 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Mom is survived by sisters Henrietta MacNeil, Millcreek, Mona McGunnis, Moncton, Marie Olstansky, Fredericton, Debbi Parlee, New Brunswick and brother Terry Gale, Sussex, NB.
Besides her parents Evelyn was predeceased by her devoted husband Ernest (Butch) Russell; infant son David and granddaughter Nicole Meaney. Also brothers Louis and Connie Gale and sisters Lillian MacDougall, Eunice Margaret Gale and son-in-law James Meaney.
Visitation for Evelyn will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
