It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leo Joseph 'Jody' Ellsworth, on Thursday, May 24 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, surrounded by his children.
Born in New Waterford Sept. 10, 1924, he was the youngest son of the late Euphrasia and Walter Ellsworth. Married to the late Claire (MacVarish) Ellsworth, they raised four children together. Jody spent his earlier years driving cab but spent most of his career working at the mines as a hoist operator. He was a family man who was known for his quick wit and loved spending time by the ocean. He was an avid horse racing and hockey fan.
Jody is survived by his two sons, Donnie (Gwen), Kingston, N.S., Billy (Linda), New Waterford; daughter, Maureen MacDonald, Cole Harbour, N.S.; sisters, Agnes Green, Carlisle, Ont., Sr. Margaret Ellsworth, Halifax, N.S., Kay (Albert) Boudreau, New Waterford and son-in-law, Glen Wainman, Victoria B.C. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Nicole, Janet, Karen, Alison, Leah, Daniel, Celeste, Peter, Jodi, Cotter, Callum, Nicholas and Danielle; six great-grandchildren, Olivia, Emmy, Bella, Lillie, Claire and Sam.
Besides his parents, Jody was predeceased by his wife, Claire; daughter, Pat; brother, Bill; daughter-in-law, Carlie (Donnie) and sister, Mary Sutherland.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Monday, May 27 from 6-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held Tuesday, May 28 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall on Convent Street, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maple Hill Manor or a charity of choice.
