Katherine Klassen

Katherine passed away peacefully on February 28, 2014 at Pioneers Lodge in Moose Jaw, SK. She was born in Davidson, SK on August 8, 1927, a twin sister of Frank. Katherine is predeceased by her parents, her husband Peter, and her brothers Frank, Henry, and William. She is survived by her siblings Justina, Marion (John), Rita (Frank), John (Lee) and Jake. Also left to mourn is Peter’s family; Ruth (Ken), Pat (Mike), Jim (Gloria), CJ (Lorraine), Chris (Ben), Vera Lynn (John), Pete (Hazel), Sharon (Ken), Diana (George) and Alice. Katherine grew up and went to school in the Concord School District. She graduated after completing her high school at Rosthern Junior College, and then attended Moose Jaw Normal School. She later earned a degree in education from the University of Victoria. Katherine began her teaching career in Saskatchewan’s rural schools and then became part of Federal Indian Affairs. For 13 years she taught Native children on reservations in Alberta and Native fishing villages in British Columbia. Next she returned to teaching in the B. C. provincial high school system. In 1975 Katherine married Peter Klassen of Herbert, SK. They lived on a farm, and while Peter farmed Kay was in charge of Peter’s Homestead Museum in Herbert. When Peter passed away in 1993, Katherine moved to Moose Jaw. She was involved in the community and won awards in Toastmasters and public speaking. She was an active member of the Prairie Pens, and in her church. A Graveside Service will be held on April 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 126-2nd Ave NE, Swift Current, SK with Reverend Bob Langdon officiating.
