Wendell Graham Hill

Born In: Sydney
Born: August 14th, 1949

Passed on: July 23rd, 2014

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a truly wonderful man, Wendell Graham Hill.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Gerald and Mae Hill.
As a young man, Wendell was diagnosed with kidney disease and underwent a relatively new procedure at that time which saved his life...a kidney transplant. The selfless donation of a kidney by his older brother, Gordon in 1973 gave Wendell a second lease on life which he cherished for the next 40 years. This made Wendell one of the longest surviving transplant patients in Nova Scotia.
Throughout his life, Wendell was a dedicated volunteer for the Kidney Foundation, instrumental in the early development of the Cape Breton Chapter. For many years he served as treasurer and raised a great deal of money to help with research and awareness of this disease which both of his daughters have inherited. In keeping with his character, Wendell was a member of St. John Ambulance, Cape Breton Brigade 390. His CNA training served him well as an instructor, teaching life-saving such as first aid and CPR to hundreds of people. He also dedicated countless hours as a volunteer on duty at countless events in Cape Breton.
Wendell was an amazingly devoted and loving father to his daughters, Alison and Madelaine who never left his side for the last month of his life.
Strong in his faith, Wendell was a long-standing member of Faith Baptist Church in Sydney.
Wendell was predeceased by his parents, Mae and Gerald Hill, Sydney, as well as brother-in-law, Greg Bennett, Dominion.
Wendell is survived by daughters, Alison, Halifax, Madelaine, Vancouver; brothers, Gordon (Joan), Trenton, Ont., Sheldon (Inez), Sydney; sisters, Shirley Bodley (Chuck), Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. and Thelma Bennett, Dominion. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews across the country.
Wendell's final wish has been realized by the acceptance of his remains by Dalhousie University which he hoped would aid in research that would someday help others. A volunteer to the end.
As per Wendell's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
The family appreciates your condolences and would like to thank all those who cared for Wendell, especially the staff of 4C and An Cala Palliative Care unit CBRH.
Donations in Wendell's memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or An Cala Palliative Care Unit at CBRH.
