Stellarton :Clarence Philip Porter was born on Dec.30, 1918 ; son to David and Margaret ( Doyle) Porter of Westville and died on July 25,2014. Clarence was predeceased by his beloved sons David Peter and Alan Clarence in 1970 , his wife of sixty –four years Gladys Genevieve (Grant) in 2011.He was also predeceased by his siblings Eileen ,Virginia ,Garfield ,and George.
He is survived by his two daughters , Phyllis Porter- Baker (John), and Joan Porter and her son Christopher David Alan D’Eon .

The Porter family moved to Stellarton in 1920. Following his high school education, Clarence worked at the family lumber and building supply business , D. Porter and Son Ltd., (named after his grandfather and father). Upon the death of his father, David Porter, Clarence acquired the family business and dedicated himself to its success.
Clarence observed the adage, “ To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Expected.”

Clarence was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish , was a Life Member and District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus.

He was Chairman and past President of the Children’s Aide Society of Pictou County, Board Member of the Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation, and Board Member of St. F.X. University. Of all his endeavors outside family and business interests, his greatest personal satisfaction came from his involvement with the Children’s Aide Society.

Clarence was a member of the Canadian Lumber Standards Association. He was Past President of the following groups and associations: Nova Scotia Forest Products; Lumber Manufacturing Association of N.S.; Maritime Retail Building Supply Dealers Association ; and the Canadian Building Supply Dealer’s Association . He was influential in forming the first buying group for building materials in the Atlantic Provinces, known as “Allont”.

Clarence was an ardent bridge player , and was a member of the Pictou County Bridge Club since its inception.

Clarence Porter also served a nine –year term as Mayor of the Town of Stellarton.

He frequently gave recognition to the wonderful people who came into his life, and the fortunate experiences he encountered . Clarence consciously chose not to dwell on the many hardships he endured . He requested that the following phrase be engraved on his headstone: Deo Gracias – Give Thanks To God.

His remains will rest in the H.C.MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton for visitation from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. on Tuesday,July 29th ,2014
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday,July 30th,2014 at 11 A.M. from Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church with Father Peter MacDonald officiating.
Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
