It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Robert ('Bobby', 'Cuff') Martell, 80, of Dominion.
Bobby passed away at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on Saturday July 26, 2014, after a brief illness.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Ralph and Clara (Boutilier) Martell.
Bobby touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity and maintained his trademark sense of humour all the way to the end. He loved listening to music and he was an avid sports fan. Bobby drove taxi for many years and was later employed at Braemore Home.
In his early years, Bobby enjoyed playing hockey at the old Glace Bay Forum and more recently enjoyed walking the Dominion Beach boardwalk with his late wife, Geraldine 'Gerry' McDonald. Bobby resided most of his life in Dominion and was married for 53 years to his wonderful wife, Gerry, who predeceased him in 2012.
Bobby will forever be remembered by his family including daughters, Peggy, Glace Bay; Brenda (Darrell) Davidson, Bridgeport; Linda, Halifax; Debbie (Troy) Gouthro, Cambridge, Ont., and Tracey, Lingan; sons, Ralph (Claudia), Dartmouth; Brian (Ellen), Lower Sackville, and David (Wendy), Howie Centre.
He was known as 'Poppie' by his 13 grandchildren, Chris, Vanessa (Garret), Jonathan, Justin, Heather (Ryan), Jennifer (Billy), Scott, Andrew, Bryson, Adam, Ryan, Riley and Olivia, and his three great-grandchildren, Gracie, Noah and Landon. Bobby is also survived by his brother, Art, Reserve Mines.
Bobby also had countless other family and friends who were blessed to have known him. Besides his wife, Bobby was predeceased by his parents, son, Danny, and his brothers, Louis and Jackie.
Cremation has taken place.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. with a funeral service in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Private interment in St. Eugene’s Cemetery.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bobby’s memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
