Jean Manettia Smith McCuaig, age 97 years of Eastend, Saskatchewan, died on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Eastend Wolf Willow Health Centre in Eastend.
She was born at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on March 7, 1917, the eldest of 5 children born to John and Manettia Bremner. After High School, she attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and was younger than the customary age to receive her Teacher’s Certificate. She came to teach at Wyle School south of Eastend in 1936, and taught there for three years. She then went to teach in Grenfell and the Moose Jaw area and worked for the government for two years before her marriage to Findlay McCuaig on June 23, 1944 in Moose Jaw. They returned to the farm in the Eastbrook District and she taught at Dunkeeley School for two years. She continued to live on the farm until 1985 when she moved into The Heritage House in Eastend. She was an active life time member of the Gardenia Rebekah Lodge serving as Noble Grand, Secretary and Treasurer, she served on the Eastend Co-op Board, was a faithful member of the Eastend United Church, serving as secretary for a number of years, she belonged to the Eastbrook Ladies Club and was involved with Home and School Association. She was an avid supporter of the NDP. She loved her farm life, gardening, playing cribbage and her annual trips to Seattle and Hawaii to visit family. She loved crocheting and teaching others to enjoy her hobby. She made numerous doilies, tablecloths and afghans, making sure every family member had a piece of her handiwork.
She was predeceased by her husband Findlay on June 27, 1982, her son Kirby on March 3, 2006, great grandson Brennan McCuaig on February 2, 2008 and by her sisters Mickey Gilham and Ruby Kennedy.
She is survived by her daughter Brenda Abe (Randy), and grandsons Barry and Craig (Kristin) all of Hawaii, her son Allen (Kay) of Eastend, granddaughter Jill McCuaig (Matt) of Swift Current, grandson Chet McCuaig (Crystal) of Nipawin, her daughter-in-law Brenda McCuaig (Linden) of Swift Current, grandson Schafer of Eastend and great granddaughters Randi and Lea of Shaunavon, grandson Raymond (Theresa) of Eastend and great grandchildren Sophia and Lucas of Eastend; two sisters, Goldie Pickett of Regina and Pat Sims (Bill) of Vancouver as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Funeral Celebrant Bernadette Schneider officiating. The pianist was Linda Wig, a family friend. Interment took place at Riverside Cemetery at Eastend. Binkley’s Funeral Service of Shaunavon (www.Binkleys.com) was in charge of the arrangements.
Honorary Pallbearers were Lee Egland, Curtis Grundler and Herb Pidt. Pallbearers were Colin McCuaig, Blaine Taylor, Lorne McCuaig, Charles Michel, Ted Taylor and Kendal McCuaig.
