Donalda H. Nelson

NELSON, Donalda H. – 98, Truro, formerly of Great Village, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born October 6, 1915, in Great Village, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Alberta (Layton) MacLachlan. Donalda attended school in Great Village and Colchester County Academy, Truro, was a graduate of Provincial Normal College and she taught at various schools in Colchester and Pictou counties. She was a member of St. James United Church and a life member of St. James UCW. Following retirement, she enjoyed some 30 years living in her home community of Great Village before moving to Parkland Estates, Truro, in 2009. Donalda took an active interest in community affairs through the Historical Society, Elizabeth Bishop Society and church involvement. She had a lifelong love of music – singing in church choirs, playing piano and organ and teaching piano to many young students. She had a keen interest in family and village genealogy and history and was a valued source of assistance to many who were exploring such matters. Donalda is survived her sons, James “Jim” (Janice), Donald “Don” (Nancy); grandchildren, Deborah, Mark (Samantha), Michael (Alice), Sarah (Pier) van Dishoeck; great grandchildren, Ana and Rex, Cole and Avery, Teo and Luca; several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harry (1988); brothers, Thomas, Mark in infancy, Harland, Muir, Malcolm; sisters, Annie Palmeter, Margaret Motley. A service of celebration will be held 2 p.m., Friday, August 1, 2014, at St. James United Church, corner of Highway 2 and Great Village Lornevale Road, Great Village, Reverend Dan Gunn officiating. Reception will follow in the church basement. In lieu of flowers, donations in Donalda’s memory to St. James United Church Preservation Fund or a charity of choice are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
