NEW GLASGOW – Thomas Everett Vincent Dort, age 87, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born June 3, 1927 in Halfway Cove, NS, he was a son of the late Joseph and Nellie (George) Dort.
Tom was very active in the West Side Community Center. Tom was an avid sports enthusiast and fan, and he coached the girl’s softball team and went on to win the Nova Scotia Championship. He had a passion for fishing and fly tying, was an avid card player and was involved in New Horizon Seniors Club and the Pictou County Seniors Festival. Tom was a volunteer firefighter with the New Glasgow Fire Department. He was employed by Schrader’s Meat Market, Dominion Stores and with the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission. Tom was loved by many and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tom leaves behind his wife, Gloria (Bilney); daughter, Deborah (Rose); son, Howard (Linda); grandson, Jeffery (Sabrina); granddaughter, Sarah (Simon); brother, Russell (Shirley); sister-in-law, Marion Dort; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Gloria “Dolly” Schrader, brothers, Vernon and Havelock Dort, sister, Johannah Lawless.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday in Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton, with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Reception to follow. Family burial will be in Abercrombie Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association.
