Lillan Margaret 'Peggy' Bryden of Dartmouth passed away July 27, 2014, at Dartmouth General Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Born in Sydney on March 5, 1932, she was the only daughter of Kenneth 'K.J.' and Evelyn (Michaud) MacDonald.
She graduated from Sydney Academy and later attended Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. She worked in the general office of Dosco followed by 12 years at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney. Peggy then spent 22 years teaching at Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth. She was very popular and a much loved teacher.
Peggy was on the first executive of the Canadian Association of Business Education Teachers and also served as president of the Nova Scotia Business Teacher’s Association. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Peggy studied piano and voice and was a member of several choirs in Sydney and Dartmouth, including the Saint Thomas Moore Choir.
She was a woman of great faith and also taught Sunday school in Dartmouth. She was especially happy when receiving cards, letters, visits and phone calls from her former students.
In her earlier years she was oresident of the New Democratic Party’s women’s group. She had a lifelong interest in politics and worked over the years to further this interest in various capacities.
Peggy loved her children and grandchildren dearly and is survived by the love of her life, her loving husband of 61 years, Fred. She was the last surviving member of her family. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a son John Kenneth 'Kenny', her only brother Capt. James Fraser MacDonald and sister-in-law Nelgah MacDonald.
She is survived by her children Karen Ann Bryden-Blom (Paul), Beaver Bank, Susan Bryden-Lowe (Garnet), Montague Gold Mines; grandchildren Matthew, Scott, Alex and Melanie Bryden, Skye Bryden-Blom and Kathryn Bryden-Lowe. She is also survived by many special nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank close friend Debbie MacLean for all her care and support as well as the nursing staff on 3-east Dartmouth General Hospital.
No visitation by request. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, in Saint Thomas Moore Roman Catholic Church (corner of Main & Caladonia Road, Dartmouth) Father Randy Doucette, celebrant. Burial will be Tuesday in Saint Margaret’s of Scotland Cemetery, Marion Bridge.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Hope Cottage.
